I had my favorites, but I wanted to find who the true protagonist is. Additionally, there are thousands of characters appearing in the novels. Inspired by their analysis, I wanted to analyze the social networks of the Romance of Three Kingdoms. It is also very long, with the English translation being more than 1500 pages long.Īll this reminded me of the excellent social network analysis of Game of Thrones, by Andrew Beveridge and Jie Shan. It is one of China’s most influential works of literature, compared to the influence of the works of Shakespeare on English literature. Romance of Three Kingdoms is a 14th-century novel, attributed to the Chinese writer Luo Guanzhong. Watching the series, I became interested in the novel it is based on. Furthermore, both have a large number of characters, heroes and villains, who interact with each other in several subplots, all eventually connected to the main plot. Both have intricate plots full of scheming, intrigues, brilliant military strategies and heroic actions. Although it is out of the scope of this article to compare the two on an artistic basis, it is certainly true that the two stories share several characteristics. I found several articles and posts comparing the two, calling Three Kingdoms the Chinese Game of Thrones. When I first heard about Three Kingdoms, I was looking for a new series to watch after the end of Game of Thrones. Even if sometimes the acting might seem exaggerated, I promise in the end, this series will not disappoint you. The series is not well known to western audiences, but I definitely would recommend it to anyone that likes historical dramas. Recently, I have started watching the Chinese television series Three Kingdoms. SPOILER ALERT: The following contains spoilers about the novel Romance of Three Kingdoms and the related series.
